IS-GS was formed on 15 May 2015 as the result of a split within the militant group Al-Mourabitoun. Since March 2019, IS-GS is formally part of the Islamic State's West Africa Province (ISWAP); accordingly, it is also called "ISWAP-Greater Sahara".
